Delusions of Grandeur

(2012)

This series of photographs is an attempt to question the views within our society concerning mental illness; a subject which is worryingly misunderstood. A large proportion of society see mental illness as something which is ‘scary’ and ‘intimidating’ and because of this they mock it, laugh in its face, humiliate the people who are afflicted by some sort of mental illness. These photographs encompass mental illness through their subjects. In these photographs are people who are mentally healthy and people who are not. I shall leave the numbers here ambiguous. The point is that, despite people’s stereotype of a mentally ill person, we cannot know and do not know who is and who is not mentally healthy. A mentally ill person is just the same as you or I.
